Rock made it back to back wins in AIL 1B at the weekend with a hard fought 28-24 win over Highfield. A yellow card apiece in the opening 5 minutes of the match ensured it was going to be an arm wrestle from the off but Rock seized the initiative, a great break from Dave McCarthy and a one-handed offload found centre partner Ciaran Mangan to dot down under the posts. Rock were dealt a major blow on the 30 minute mark when the referee adjudged Kaylam Tytherleigh to have made head contact and a red card followed. Highfield took 3 points and it seemed destined to be a 4 point gap at the half until Rock got a 5 metre penalty and number 8 Odhran Ring was the beneficiary. Half time 14-3.
Rock came out of the blocks flying in the second half, Dave McCarthy dotting down for his own try which was almost immediately followed by a customary Ciaran Mangan intercept. Needless to say Conor O' Shaugnessy was flawless from the tee for the afternoon. Another yellow card and 13 men for Rock, meant the final quarter was a bit more nervy than would have been liked. Highfield rattled off 3 tries to make it a 4 point game but thankfully the final whistle came at the right time. 28-24 final score and a 5 point match haul for Rock to take into next weekend's away fixture away at Queens University.
