Saturday the 16th of November saw the official opening of the newly completed all weather pitch at Stradbrook. Minister Mary Mitchell O'Connor T.D., President John Colgan, and Chairman Pat Finn were present for the ribbon "cutting" honors, and Father Tom Nash CSSp. kindly provided a blessing for the facility and all those who will play on the surface.
Fully funded, by dedicated club supporters and a sports capital grant, with NO additional bank debt, the all weather pitch has been designated as a new income stream to the club for 2019/20 and following years, with several local football and GAA clubs teams booked for long-term rentals.
Past president, Paddy Lucey (2015-16), was specifically mentioned for his devoted support of the rugby club. A special dedication in the form of a memorium stone will be erected at the site of the all weather pitch, in memory of Paddy's late son, Stephen. Stephen began his rugby career as a mini player in Stradbrook, and lined-out for Blackrock and Monkstown rugby clubs as an adult. Stephen died tragically in December 2016.
Following the opening ceremony, a pre-match lunch was attended by 150 guests, prior to the Rock v Wanderers AIL derby match where the 2 teams drew 12-12.
