Blackrock College RFC would like to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of Respect to all people associated with the game of Rugby at all levels, particularly match officials but also players, volunteers, members and spectators.
Blackrock College RFC and its members have a responsibility to promote a positive and respectful environment for all match participants and spectators in accordance with recent
communications from the IRFU.
Please see two recent letters addressing match official abuse from both the President of the IRFU and the IRFU's Director of Rugby Development.
A Letter from the President of the IRFU, Declan Madden:
Dear Colleagues,
As President of the Irish Rugby Football Union, in this special 150th year, I felt it important to reach out to everyone involved in refereeing. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable service you provide at all levels of our game and to reaffirm the IRFU’s unwavering support for all match officials.
The values of the IRFU are essential to our rugby community, and upholding these values is fundamental to protecting our brand and guiding our actions. Respect is a key value that we must all embody. Respect for each other—players, supporters, administrators, and referees alike—is a cornerstone of our organisation.
As supporters, coaches, players, and administrators—whether in amateur or professional contexts—it is imperative that we remember that referees are human. They have feelings, and while they may make mistakes, abuse and disrespect have no place in our game. It is critical that we call out any instances of abuse at all levels. Referees participate in this sport out of passion; no one should be subjected to disrespect.
In conclusion, I want to reassure every referee, regardless of your level of involvement, that you have the support of a grateful IRFU. Without you, our game cannot exist. Thank you all once again for your dedication to our great sport.
Sincerely,
Declan Madden
President IRFU
A Letter from the IRFU's Director of Rugby Development, Colin McEntee:
To: IRFU Affiliated Clubs and Schools
Subject: Addressing Match Official Abuse
The IRFU Rugby Committee has become increasingly concerned at increasing incidents of unacceptable behaviour directed towards our match officials, across all levels of rugby. As a sport founded on core values that include respect and integrity, it is imperative that we uphold these principles at all times. Rugby's spirit and excitement should never justify disrespectful actions against anyone and particularly towards those who officiate our matches.
The IRFU is calling on all clubs and schools to take immediate and decisive action to curb any poor behaviour shown towards match officials. We urge you to reinforce the standards of conduct expected from everyone involved in our game. The respect we demonstrate within our environments impacts on the health and sustainability of rugby, and our dedicated volunteers, match officials, coaches, and participants. Without match officials, the game cannot proceed. We urge your club and school to take all steps you can to ensuring that at all times you are maintaining a positive, respectful environment for all participants and spectators. Let us collectively commit and ensure that rugby remains a sport defined by admirable conduct including respect at all times. To assist in this effort, please review the IRFU's latest guidance regarding match official abuse, issued in November 2024. The IRFU will strictly enforce a zero-tolerance policy for violations of this nature. IRFU Guidance on Match Official Abuse Your cooperation and commitment to these values are crucial as we strive to create a positive and respectful environment for everyone involved in our sport. Thank you for your attention and dedication to upholding the integrity of rugby.
Sincerely,
Colin McEntee
IRFU Director of Rugby Development
